The support person emailed me the case number and a link to 'Charge and connect with the USB-C port on the new iPad Pro' at support.apple.com. It says there you need to use the Belkin USB-A to USB-C cable to sync the iPad Pro 11' and iTunes on a PC or Mac. I have one of those and it works just fine. The Apple adapter does work with a laptop with USB-C for connecting a USB thumb drive. I am returning it to Best Buy.
